We meet up at LUX B129, on 11/10, at 12.15-13.00. You bring the questions and me and Fredrik Ekengren will assist in finding the answers.

We are happy to offer this new course in, created and held by our post-doc in ancient history Beatriz Pañeda Murcia: Cross-cultural Religious Interactions in the Ancient World. 

The course aims to analyse interreligious encounters in a multi-ethnic, multicultural and highly interconnected Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean world (from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD). Students will have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with current theories and methods in the study of intercultural encounters and religious contacts in antiquity. Through case studies based on literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources, they will also have the opportunity to explore different examples and consequences of interactions between polytheistic and monotheistic traditions. By focusing on religious exchange between religions, students are invited to challenge the traditional historiographical idea that Greco-Roman ’paganism’, Judaism and Christianity developed within separate social spheres as distinct ’cultural packages’, as well as the modern dichotomy between ’polytheism’ and ’monotheism’. Other topics covered in the course include the spread of religious ideas and practices, the construction of religious identities and alienation, the importance of religious affiliation in the context of migration, competition between religions, transnational religious expression and the relationship between mystery cults and Christianity.

The subject of the course stretch over several different disciplines, that’s why the eligibility allows for a bachelor of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, archaeology, historical archaeology, historical osteology, history, Greek, Latin, history of science and ideas, history of religions, Jewish studies, Old and New Testament exegesis or equivalent knowledge.
Oral and written proficiency in English corresponding to English 6/B from Swedish upper secondary school is a requirement.

För antikstuderande är de två kurserna som drivs av de svenska instituten i Rom och Aten alltid viktiga och i vår är det den i Rom som går av stapeln. Om du har en kandidat i antikens kultur och samhällsliv och är intresserad av att läsa en avancerad kurs på plats i Rom är det nu du ska söka. Kom ihåg att den ska sökas både på antagning.se och genom en separat blankett för att söka stipendiet för att finansiera resan. Båda måste vara inne i tid för att det ska räknas som en hel ansökan.

För alla som vill komma igång ordentligt med uppsatser eller andra skrivuppgifter: här är Studieverkstadens skrivträffar för höstterminen!

Under studietiden finns det möjlighet att söka uppdrag inom universitetet som blir en bra merit att ta med sig ut i arbetslivet senare – bland annat kan man vara studentambassadör. Just nu söker HT-fakulteten nya studentambassadörer och om du följer länken kan du läsa mer om uppdraget och hur du söker. 

Så, idag öppnade anmälan för vårterminen 2024, och det känns alltid som väldigt tidigt. Flera av er har bara precis börjat på första grundkursen, medan andra är inne på sin kandidattermin eller nästsista terminen på mastern. Oavsett är höstterminen en underlig tid när det två veckor in är dags att planera nästa år. 

Anmälningsperioden är 15/9-16/10. Ni hittar alla våra kurser på antagning.se 

Bra att veta: 

• i vår är det sista gången som fortsättningskursen ges så som den ser ut nu, ARKA22 alltså, så om du gått grundkursen ARKA21 och vill ta fortsättningskursen till den är det nu i vår som gäller.
• i vår är första gången den nya grundkursen för arkeologi ges, om du är nyfiken på skillnaderna så innehåller den nya grundkursen alla periodstudier från mesolitikum till vikingatid.
• de kurser som är på avancerad nivå behövs det en avklarad kandidatkurs för att vara behörig till men de går att söka och bli antagen till med förbehållet att om kandidatuppsatsen inte blir klar kommer du inte att kunna gå kursen till våren.
• i vår enbart ges en avancerad kurs i antikens kultur och samhällsliv på 7,5 poäng, Cross-Cultural Religious Interactions in the Ancient World, som också kräver en avklarad kandidatkurs men är ämnesövergripande så det finns fler alternativ till kandidatnivå än annars (historia, religion, judaistik etc). 

Studierektor Fredrik Ekengren och jag kommer att hålla ett informationsmöte i oktober (återkommer med datum och tid) kring förändringarna i kursupplägg och ta frågor kring ansökan som vanligt, så har ni något ni funderar över finns det tillfällen att fråga om det. Vill ni ha ett samtal med mig kring upplägg av examen och framtida studier går det bra att boka det redan nu även om de första lediga tiderna är i oktober också.

Our master program students will apply for the spring semester with our Director of Studies, Fredrik Ekengren, this information is for students that study free standing courses on both Bachelor and Master level (both undergrad and graduate level).

Förutom våra egna forskarseminarier och besökande föredragshållare i olika sammanhang (som ni alltid hittar i kalendariet på hemsidan) så finns det andra föredrag och seminarieserier att hålla koll på. Att gå på så många av dessa som möjligt är extra viktigt för masterstudenter på väg ut i arbetslivet, men är också nyttigt för de som funderar över framtida uppsatser och var utbildningen ska ta vägen. Ta chansen att se vad andra gör av sina arbetsvägar. Seminarierna är inklippta nedan från mängder av olika källor, därav de olika formaten, och om titeln är på engelska är troligen hela seminariet det med.

Besides our own research seminars in the different areas, and the visiting dignitaries, that you can find in our calendar at our home page, there’s also seminar series outside of our Department to keep an eye on. Attending as many of the available seminars as possible is extra important for our master students who’ll soon be entering the professional world, but it’s also relevant for any student considering where their studies could take them or what to write a thesis in. Below you’ll find information on several different seminars from different sources so the format will vary, but if the title is in English the rest of the seminar probably will be too. 

On Thursday, 14th September, 13.15-14.15 Anjali Goswami from the Natural History Museum London will give a talk ”From Development to Deep Time: Reconstructing the Evolution of Diversity with a Phenomic Approach” in the Blue Hall at the Ecology building.

Thursday 14th September (15.30 – 17.00) Speaker: Dr. Shumon T. Hussain (Assistant Professor) from Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, Aarhus University, Denmark will give a talk on ‘Living with Ravens, Whales and Beavers: Multispecies Archaeology in Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene Northern Eurasia’ in room: LUX B339.  Thursday, sept 21st at 3 pm Prof. Dorian Fuller from UCL will give a lecture entitled ”Frontiers of archaeobotany: Quantitative and Qualitative advances in the archaeobotanical study of domestication and ancient plant foods through time series data, x-ray tomography and the microstructures of food preparation”. Please note that this talk will take place in the LINXS building (in the Ideon Science Park, about a 15 minute walk from LUX). There will be a mingle on the LINXS rooftop after the talk followed by an afterwork. Prof. Fuller is the first scholar to be invited to Lund as part of our new LINXS theme in Heritage Science. This is an opportunity to hear from one of the world’s top experts in plant domestication and the origins of agriculture.
