STUDIEVÄGLEDARBLOGGEN

Forskarseminarierna är en chans för studenter, personal och (förstås) forskare i ämnena att följa med i var forskningen är på väg, vad som är nytt eller stort och det är också en insikt i hur ämnets diskurs förs. Det är aldrig för tidigt i studierna att börja gå på dem! Somliga ämnen har ett i veckan, eller ett varannan vecka, somliga ämnen gör hela seminariedagar för dem.

Sitting in on research seminars is a good way to gain knowlege of the departments own researchers, PhD students, or teachers latest work, but also a chans to take part in the discussions within the field of choice. It is never too early to start attending, you do not need to be a researcher or academic to be there! Some subject have monthly or bi-weekly meetings and some have full days of seminars. 

Seminars will be held in English and take place at 15.15–17.00 in room A126, unless otherwise stated.

 Mälardalens universitet har lagt upp en serie på youtube som handlar om vad som kan vara bra och viktigt att veta kring universitetsstudier och den är väl värd att se igenom. 

Här kommer en utlysning från META – Historisk arkeologisk tidskrift:

Vi välkomnar bidrag till nästa nummer av META – Historisk arkeologisk tidskrift. I kommande nummer vill vi särskilt fokusera på det återigen växande intresset för materiella källor som präglat hela det humanistiska forskningsfältet, arkeologin och museivärlden under senare år.  META 2024 kommer därför vara ett temanummer med fokus på den materiella kulturen i både bredd och djup, men kommer som vanligt också innehålla ett antal högkvalitativa artiklar som representerar aktuell forskning och kunskap inom hela den historiska arkeologin. Vi ser gärna flera kortare artiklar (1-2 bilder och ca 6000-10000 tecken) som belyser nya aspekter av enskilda föremål eller fyndkategorier vid sidan av ett antal mer djuplodande artiklar (om max 25 000 tecken och 5-6 bilder) som problematiserar olika aspekter av materialitetens mångfacetterade betydelser eller andra sidor av det historisk arkeologiska arbetsfältet. Har ni en idé, något liggande i byrålådan eller som gnager i bakhuvudet? Tveka inte att höra av er med artikelförslag till tidskrift@histark.se. Manusstopp för nästa numer av META är som vanligt den 1 februari.

Vi är tillbaka! Semestern är över och vi hoppas att allas ledigheter och sommarsysslor har varit givande. Nu börjar det stora maskineriet som är universitetet komma igång och alla funktioner ni behöver på institutionen är på plats. Om ni har mailat eller ringt under semestern och inte får uppföljning från oss under veckan – hör av er igen!

We’re back! Vacation time is over and we hope everyone of you has had a good summer no matter where or how you spent it. The great machine that is the university is gearing up for the semester but all the different offices you might need to reach within the department is staffed again. So if you’ve sent us an email or phoned us during the summer and don’t recieve a follow up during the week – get back to us!

There has been some calls for application regarding PhD-positions at different universities and here are the links to those:

First up a 3-year fellowship at University of Oslo in Viking Age archaeology, focus on production of whetstone, deadline 14th August 2023.

Second is actually three 4-year positions at Bern University about the transfer of bone relics. Since I don’t have a link for that I include the entire text below and the deadline is 31st July 2023. The project language is English but you need language skills in Spanish or Portugese as well. 

3 PhD positions (SNSF doctoral positions, 100% for four years)
Three PhD positions are available in the SNSF-funded project “Global Bones: Entangled
Histories, Transfers and Translations in the Early Modern Age” at the Institute of Art History of
the University of Bern starting on 1 October 2023.

“Global Bones” investigates the global trajectories of Christian body relics in the era usually
referred to – from a European perspective – as the Early Modern period. The research project
describes and analyses intercontinental relic transfers and conducts local case studies to
examine the negotiation processes that took place between actors of different cultural and
religious traditions regarding the handling of human remains.

“Global Bones” is divided into five regional projects, each with a specific geographical focus,
and a transversal project, in which the results of the regional projects flow together. For three
of the regional projects, doing research on the Kingdom of Kongo (present-day Angola, DR
Congo and Republic of Congo), on New Spain (present-day Mexcio), and on Portuguese Latin
America (present-day Brazil), we are seeking doctoral students. The projects trace and
analyze the movements of relics, as well as the entanglements and conflicts of the respective
local traditions in dealing with human remains and the Christian cult of relics brought to the
regions in the course of Christian missions. “Global Bones” is an interdisciplinary project and
draws on approaches and methods from the various humanities. Applications from graduates
(Master) of disciplines such as history, ethnology, religious studies, and art history are
welcome.

The projects envisage research trips in the respective regions and international library and
archive studies. In addition, intensive collaboration of the project team is planned, with regular
meetings, joint work on the transversal project’s database, workshops, and a concluding
conference. Residence in Bern or Switzerland is therefore mandatory. (If a move to
Switzerland is necessary, this should be arranged by the start of the project).

The project language is English. Language skills in Portuguese and/or Spanish are required. It
would be advantageous if candidates already had expertise and knowledge of local historical
and cultural contexts.

Tasks include
• the writing of a PhD thesis in the respective thematic field of the project
• the collaboration in the planning and implementation of the joint transversal project (data
collection and input into the database)
• the participation in the activities of the project (jours fixes, reading courses, project
presentations, workshops, lectures, and conference)

Required are
• an above-average Master’s degree in art history, history, ethnology, or religious studies
• very good written and spoken English
• good reading skills in Portuguese and/or Spanish
• a willingness to undertake research trips to the respective research region
• a residence in Switzerland or the willingness to move to Switzerland
• reliability and the ability to work in a team

We offer
• a 100% position for four years
• close collaboration in an inspiring project team with international contacts
• intensive and supportive doctoral supervision
• the opportunity to contribute to the conception and realization of innovative research
• a central workplace
• salary according to SNSF guidelines

Med sommaren kommer också ledighet och det gäller även institutionen! Här är några saker att ha i åtanke: 

Institutionen kommer att ha stängt mellan midsommar och mitten av augusti och ifall du har ärenden på institutionen behöver du boka tid med någon som släpper in dig. Även resten av LUX har sommartider så kolla vad som gäller innan du tar dig dit. Alla som jobbar på institutionen har olika semestertider men det generella är att lärare och handledare går på semester vid midsommar och är tillbaka i början-mitten av augusti. Så om det finns något du behöver hjälp med, hör av dig meddetsamma. Glöm inte att anmäla dig till omtentorna och uppsamlingstillfället för uppsatserna innan 16 juni.

Summer means free time, even for the department! Here are some things to keep in mind during the summer:

The department is closed 24/6-10/8, and the rest of LUX have summer hours as well. Remember to check that you can get in if you have an appointment or need of anything during that time. All staff have different vacation dates but rule of thumb says that between Midsummer and early August is vacation time. So if you have any questions or paperwork you need to get done, do it now. And don’t forget to request a re-exam or to defend your thesis before June 16th! 

Our study administrator Susanne Karlsson, susanne.karlsson@ark.lu.se, are away between July 12th and  August 9th.

Our Director of Studies Fredrik Ekengren, fredrik.ekengren@ark.lu.se, are away between June 23d and  August 14th.

If you need a certificate or other assistance while we are away, the International Desk can help out in most cases. They are open three days a week the entire summer!
