Going to confrerences and presenting papers or posters are a big part of the academic conversation and the research environment. It is never to early to start either! Here is a conference that is physically nearby (if at all possible) and thematically relevant to a lot of our students. So check it out and if you are curious about presenting a paper on research you’ve done as part of an essay or theisis do a little research, ask your supervisors for guidance and submit an abstract! At the very least you get better at submitting, and maybe you even get to go to a conference. At present they are not sure if the conference is open to just listen in or visit but I’ll keep you posted if that becomes the case. 

Here is the infromation I got from the organisers: 

The archaeological conference Death in Transition: New archaeological perspectives on burial practices and societal change will take place in Stockholm, 22-23 September 2022, and we would warmly invite paper submissions.

The conference is geographically and chronologically open and researchers from all career stages are welcome to submit proposals. The deadline for submitting abstracts is February 28. 2022 (see information below and the conference webpage for details).

We are planning to pursue publication of selected papers.

The aim is to organise an in-person event in Stockholm, but we are prepared to move the event online if circumstances necessitate it.

Burials and burial rites often play a central role in the archaeological (re)construction of narratives of societal change. Past migrations or religious changes are traced through the spread of specific burial practices, and the inclusion of certain objects or material. Periods of social and economic strain in the past are established through or confirmed by the study of graves and grave goods. In the conference organizers’ own work we have been challenged by – and are challenging – the relationship between burials and Christianisation in late antique and Viking Age Europe respectively, where burials are used to confirm established narratives of where, when, and how the religious transformation progressed. The close connection made between burials and religious ideas has meant that graves are rarely used to address other topics, and that the possible influence of other types of societal changes and turmoil on changing burial practices has been overlooked.

In view of recent challenges to how we perceive and construct change in archaeology, this conference wishes to explore the role of graves and burial practices in the construction of narratives of transformations, as well as our understanding of burial practices in periods of societal change. The creation of new archaeological data through fieldwork and application of new methods makes it possible to re-evaluate our current state of knowledge in the field of burial archaeology.

Central questions this conference hopes to address are:

• What roles do burials and burial practices have in societal changes, as well as in the construction of archaeological narratives of change? What challenges and  limitations are there in using burials as evidence of societal change?
• What is change, and what is variation in burial practice? How can we distinguish variations in burial practice from transformation of burial practice?
• How do we approach the scale and tempo of transformation processes?
• How do we link burial practices and other societal changes in periods of transition and turmoil?
•  
• How can innovation in computational and archaeo-scientific methods lead to new understandings about burial practice, and changing burial practices in     particular?
• How can new theoretical perspectives impact our understanding of death and burial in relation to societal changes?

The aim of the conference is to explore these questions through geographically and chronologically diverse perspectives in order to challenge and advance our understanding of the relationship between burial practices and change in the past. Papers may include but are not limited to the following topics:

• Periodization
• Textual sources and archaeological change
• New theoretical perspectives
• Methodological innovations
• Migration and colonisation
• War and conflict
• Religious and political change
• Environmental change
• Technological innovations

Museilärare: 

”Du är en i vårt team som tillsammans arbetar för att göra både virtuella och fysiska besök på Glimmingehus till en lustfylld och innehållsrik upplevelse. Du genomför visningar av borgen/3D-modellen av borgen, livesändningar till skolor och allmänhet samt dramatiseringar och pedagogiska program på plats för allmänhet, skolgrupper och bokade grupper. Vi ser det som självklart att du är öppen för att arbeta digitalt, arbeta med barn samt i roll. Du tar även emot internationella gäster med visningar på engelska och kanske på tyska eller något annat språk. Genom publika aktiviteter kring medeltida sysslor och hantverk bidrar du till att levandegöra borgen och borggården. Sök lediga jobb

Förutom fältarbete är sommaren tiden för att testa sina förmågor på andra delar av yrkesområdet – som till exempel inom förmedling. Här är en annons från Eketorps borg på Öland som ägnar sig åt förmedling och kulturminnesturism. 

De lägger stor vikt vid personlig lämplighet och tidigare guiderfarenhet är meriterande men inte ett krav. Sista ansökningsdag är 13/2. Här är annonsen.

Det här är en annons som jag vet är högintressant för flera av våra studenter, nuvarande och examinerade, så spana in den i sin helhet hos polisen i Malmö.

I korta drag är det en arkeolog med inriktning på sensorteknik som de söker, så det smalnar av möjligheterna att ansöka något och deras formulering är

Som forensisk arkeolog kommer du till stor del att arbeta med brottsplatsdokumentation (BPD). BPD är främst inriktat på ny sensorteknik för att på effektivare sätt avbilda och visualisera brottsplatser, spår och händelseförlopp. Området kan delas in i inhämtning/avbildning, visualisering och analys. Ett fokusområde som är under uppbyggnad är just forensisk arkeologi där man tillämpar arkeologiska metoder och erfarenheter på brottsplatsen.

Som forensisker inom forensisk arkeologi med inriktning sensorteknik kommer du vara med att bygga upp och vidareutveckla området. Det innebär ärendeverksamhet, undervisning, forskning och utveckling samt att ta fram metodstöd. Eftersom det är ett område under uppbyggnad kräver det också mycket samarbeten nationellt och internationellt. Utvecklingen bedrivs i nära samarbete med landets forensiska sektioner, relevanta företag och forskningsinstitut.

De söker någon med magister eller högre utbildning, med god kunskap om eller stor erfarenhet av digital arkeologi och sensorteknik bland andra krav.

Här på institutionen bjuds studenterna på flera olika möjligheter att delta i seminarier i våra ämnen. Vi har forskarseminarier i alla våra ämnen och de är öppna för alla våra studenter oavsett nivå på studierna. Somliga är på institutionen (när världsläget tillåter) och somliga online, men på vårt kalendarium kan ni hitta de som ges genom oss. Kalendariet hittar ni på vår hemsida, ark.lu.se, längst ner. Det är aldrig för tidigt att börja delta i dem ifall det är en framtid inom ämnet som är planen. 

Somliga seminarier har svensk titel och somliga engelsk, detta signalerar vilket språk seminariet kommer att hållas på.

There are several possibilities for students at the department to participate in seminars in our subjects during your education. We have for example research seminars in all our subjects that are open to everyone, no matter your current level of studies. Some of them will be at campus, when the situation allows, and the rest online. You’ll find all of them in the calendar at the bottom of our home page ark.lu.se. It’s never too soon to start participating if you aim to have a future in these subjects. 

Notice that some of the seminars are in English and some in Swedish. The title of the seminar signals what language it will be held in. 

It doesn’t rain but it pours – here is another PhD position to apply for if you are elegible. This one is in Oslo in Archaeology and as part of a research milieu and team. Go look it over!

Det är som ni förstår rätt hård konkurrens om platserna och om det här är något som en hoppas på för sin framtid är det aldrig för tidigt att börja fundera och läsa kring ett ämne.

Our department gets to offer two PhD positions once a year but the subjects rotates. This year we have open positions in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, and in Archaeology:
