A position as a Laboratory Research Scientist (LRS) has been created at the Ancient Genomics Lab (www.skoglundlab.org) of the Francis Crick Institute, led by Dr. Pontus Skoglund. Applications are welcome from candidates with a strong background in bioarchaeology, human osteology and/or zooarchaeology, with an interest in working in an ancient DNA laboratory. Excellent time management, organizational skills, and interest in manual skeletal sampling are required. Additional activities to skeletal sampling can include scoping for relevant material in the literature, contacting archaeologists and curators to initiate collaborations, preparing and coordinating access agreements, managing transfer, sampling, databasing, and potentially performing the first steps of DNA extraction. Ideally, the successful candidate will contribute both to the lab’s project on dog and wolf DNA, and to projects on ancient human DNA.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Ethical handling of human remains (BABAO guidelines)
Handling of zooarchaeological remains from canids (wolves and dogs)
Sampling of bone and teeth with a fine dentistry drill, retrieval of osseous bones and teeth
Communicating with collaborators for sample access, and returning results
Searching the literature and collections for relevant samples
Skeletal sample cataloging, shipping and return of samples
Manual first molecular digestion step for DNA analysis and radiocarbon dating
Sampling visits with partner groups and institutions
Planning and designing sequencing effort based on initial DNA results
Clean lab management. Maintenance and supplies
Participation in scientific meetings within the group and wider community
Documenting work and contributing to scientific publications

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative, open, dynamic and collegial, in addition to the following:
Essential
BSc or MSc in Bioarchaeology, or a related field
Experience with human osteology and zooarchaeology
Strong skills in organizing and recording sample handling
