A position as a Laboratory Research Scientist (LRS) has been created at the Ancient Genomics Lab (www.skoglundlab.org) of the Francis Crick Institute, led by Dr. Pontus Skoglund. Excellent time management, organizational skills, and interest in manual skeletal sampling are required. Additional activities to skeletal sampling can include scoping for relevant material in the literature, contacting archaeologists and curators to initiate collaborations, preparing and coordinating access agreements, managing transfer, sampling, databasing, and potentially performing the first steps of DNA extraction. Ideally, the successful candidate will contribute both to the lab’s project on dog and wolf DNA, and to projects on ancient human DNA.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ethical handling of human remains (BABAO guidelines)

  •

Handling of zooarchaeological remains from canids (wolves and dogs)

Skeletal sample cataloging, shipping and return of samples

  •

Manual first molecular digestion step for DNA analysis and radiocarbon dating

  •

Sampling visits with partner groups and institutions

  •

Planning and designing sequencing effort based on initial DNA results

  •

Clean lab management. Maintenance and supplies

  •

Participation in scientific meetings within the group and wider community

  •

Documenting work and contributing to scientific publications

  • Ethical handling of human remains (BABAO guidelines)
