Byzantium and the Baltic Sea

We got information on a course for students with a Bachelor degree that might be of interest to many of our master students, so here’s the text, and please note that even if the course is given in English the application information is in Swedish. If you have any trouble with that either ask a Swedish speaking friend or come to me and we’ll manage the application together. I’ve added the link directly to antagning.se in the text below. Application deadline is October 15, same as all other courses.

Byzantium and the Baltic Sea: Urban Interfaces and Maritime Relations in Medieval Europe

7.5 credits

This master’s level course explores Byzantium and big towns from the East Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea in a comparative and diachronic perspective during the Medieval period.

The course problematizes the social and spatial dynamics of these maritime cities, their structural elements, cultural and economic exchanges, as well as their significance as nodes in larger networks. The course will also examine medieval towns such as Istanbul and Visby as cultural heritage, modern and contemporary reception, conservation and historiography.

The course is given in English, online and the teaching takes place via Zoom. The course includes
an excursion to Istanbul, planned for late February 2025. Participation in the field trip is not a
requirement to pass the course but is strongly encouraged. Please note that admitted students are
responsible for covering their expenses for the field trip, check with your university for available
scholarships and travel grants, see links on USI network. Subsidized shared accommodation is
offered at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul and some meals are included.
